Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford started to become interested in acting when she was a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she was a poor fit there. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot at the third time made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford did not finish her studies in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in 1991, appearing in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage, and joined the company's 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
